Road Sector Development Project (RSDP)

The Road Sector Development Project (RSDP) is being implemented by Government of Nepal (GON) with the grant assistance from the World Bank. The implementing agency for the Project is Department of Roads (DOR) under the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works (MOPPW). The project is being implemented with the overall objective of:

  • 6% increase in the number of people with all season road access
  • 35% decrease in travel time for target population
  • Effective road services to users
  • Effective and sustainable funding for Road Maintenance by Roads Board

Project Components:
The main components of the RSDP as designed comprised of the following:

Component I : Road Development
i) Road Upgrading: Upgrading of about 297 km of existing dry- season roads to all-season standard with low cost sealed gravel pavement (Otta Seal):

  • Tripurasundari- Satbanjha (25 km)
  • Satbhanjha- Gokuleswor (54 km)
  • Khodpe- Kalinga Bridge (Chainpur) (62 km)
  • Surkhet- Khidkijyula (Kalikot) (128 km)
  • Tallodungeswor- Dailekh (28 km )

ii) Periodic Maintenance of 450 km of Strategic Roads in the project period.

iii) Road Safety Physical works
      a. Road safety audit in the accident prone road sections in SRN,
      b. Road safety works in Black spot areas in SRN,

Component II : Institutional Strengthening and Policy Reform
Support DOR, RBNepal, and MOPPW to sustain and deepen institutional development activities focusing on:

  • Human Resource Development (RSSDU)
  • Geo-technical, environmental and Social Development (GESU)
  • IT and MIS Development (MIS-IT)
  • Road Asset Management
  • Preparation of Road Safety Action Plan (TESU),
  • Effective Quality Assurance
  • Mechanical training centre
  • Strengthening Roads Board operations, Nepal
  • Technical audit
  • Equipment and Logistics
  • Preparation of a follow up project
