Shahidmarga Road Project is one of the most significant road infrastructure projects in western Nepal, connecting Ghorahi, Holeri, Niwagaon, Tila, Ghartigoun, Thawang, Mahat, and Dumai through the hilly regions of Rolpa and neighboring districts. The road has played a major role in strengthening regional connectivity, improving transportation facilities, and supporting the social and economic development of remote settlements that were once difficult to access throughout the year.
The project holds both developmental and historical importance for the region. Areas connected by Shahidmarga were previously isolated due to challenging geography, lack of reliable transportation, and seasonal road blockages during the monsoon. With the gradual upgrading and blacktopping of various road sections, local residents now have easier access to markets, educational institutions, health services, government offices, and other essential facilities.
Among the major achievements under the project, the Ghorahi–Holeri road section had already been blacktopped in earlier phases. However, due to the operation of heavy vehicles carrying loads beyond the road’s designed capacity, several parts of the road have experienced significant damage and deterioration over time. Considering the increasing traffic flow and the growing need for safer and more durable transportation infrastructure, the process of preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for further upgrading and strengthening of this section is currently underway. The proposed upgrade aims to develop the road in a way that can safely accommodate high-capacity and heavy-load vehicles in the future.
Similarly, the Holeri–Tila road section has already been fully blacktopped, significantly improving year-round transportation and reducing travel difficulties for the local population. The Tila–Darbot road section has also been completely upgraded and officially handed over to the Road Division Office, Pyuthan, marking another important milestone in the overall development of Shahidmarga.
At present, the Darbot–Kharibot road section remains in the upgrading phase, with construction and improvement works progressing gradually. Once completed, this section is expected to further strengthen transportation access and regional connectivity across the surrounding rural municipalities.
Despite facing challenges such as difficult terrain, landslides, weather-related disruptions, and increasing transportation pressure, Shahidmarga Road Project continues to remain a priority infrastructure project for the region. The continuous upgrading and expansion of the road network is expected to contribute significantly to economic growth, tourism promotion, agricultural trade, public service delivery, and the overall development of Rolpa and neighboring districts in the coming years.
